The Coaching Style | Primal Leadership

Hashir Jaffry

She was new at the firm and eight months pregnant. One day staying late at work, she looked up from her work and saw her boss outside the door. He asked her how she was doing, and began asking her questions. How did she like her job? Where did she want to go with her career? Would she come back after she had her baby? These conversations would continued every day over the next month, The boss was David Ogilvy, the father of advertising; the employee he was talking with was Shelley Lazarus, former CEO of Ogilvy and Mather. David Ogilvy was Shelley’s mentor, guiding her and having deep conversation about her dreams, life goals, and careers. This is the coaching style; one of the most positive and influential leadership styles that a manager or leader can obtain.

Think about your favourite sports team’s coach – like the Raptors or the Blue Jays – and think about what makes them such a great team. The answer is that they have a coach! The coach is the one who pulls off the strategies and tactics to win games. Similarly, a coach is required in business where the company can continue to scale and motivate employees. The coaching style recognizes the strengths and weaknesses of a team member, and seeks to improve their performance through one-on-one training and workshops.

The coaching style, however, focuses more on personal development rather than accomplishing tasks. If an employee lacks a certain trait, then the leader who utilizes this style understands that he or she must be comfortable spending time with them than spending time in work and completing tasks. The leader understands that despite the tangents and time for coaching, it pays off in the long-run.

The purpose of this style is to help team members grow and become better versions of themselves.
